The Easter Bunny. Everyone’s heard of him, right? A tall rabbit with a basket of colorful chocolate eggs that he hides for children to find. I’d honestly be shocked if you hadn’t heard of him, even just as the tagline to some new, easter confection marketed by large corporations who don’t actually care about you at all- outside your money. But he’s an unworthy representative of this holiday. Kids running around, stuffing their faces with magical, expensive, bunny eggs- This is not Easter. Easter is much more than a corporate excuse to inflate the price of chocolate- it’s a time of growth and renewal.
As Christians, the Easter weekend is a time to reflect on Christ and all He’s done for us. On Good Friday we recall His suffering and death on the cross, holding that moment in our hearts to try to understand how someone as good as God would die, on purpose, for us. And come Easter Monday, we rejoice that the death of our Jesus was not the end; we celebrate His life, our lives, and our renewed everlasting lives together that involve a different, more difficult, sort of living.
The pastels, the freshly hatched chicks, the sweetness of chocolate melting on our tongues- all this fades away in the glory of God’s sacrifice and subsequent victory over death. We are reminded of how worthy Jesus Christ is, and our worship songs become even more vehement because of it. Every day the sun shines is a day God controls. For every chick that hatches, God is the one who wound up its heart to beat prior to the hatching day. The flowers push up from the soil, beautiful, breaking free from the dark confines of the Earth in a similar manner to Jesus walking out of His tomb after the angel rolled the stone away.
So perhaps these things don’t fade away, but become even sharper and more appreciated as we remember to see God’s hand in the little things. What else can we do this season but praise? 1 Peter 1:3 says “ Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” How fitting that this is the verse of the month for our school!
I pray this month we live in the Spirit of God, worshiping fervently because we cannot help but praise!
