Romans 12:12 ~ Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
The beginning of a new year comes with memorable reflections and vast thoughtfulness. It is a time to look back on what has passed and to look forward to what there is to come. Resolutions, goals, and new aspirations are conceived to bring desired productivity. But in the midst of the chaos of new year distractions, Jesus brings forth his calm reassurance of hope.
Biblically, the word hope yields a sense of importance that society doesn’t recognize. Webster's dictionary classifies hope as merely a “wish” for something to be or happen a certain way. It becomes something unattainable, like the odds of 1 in 292 million people winning the lottery. This kind of hope, or wishful thinking, only brings repeated disappointment. Unlike this, biblical hope is secured as we have a “confident expectation” of what Jesus has promised.
Romans 8:24-25 ~ For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Jesus is our hope, and through trials and darkness, we can stand firm in the knowledge that his faithfulness toward us will never be hindered. He brings us no uncertainty, so we can give thanks for this and proclaim to others his gift of enduring hope.
