Going For Godliness

Bzzzt. Bzzzt. Bzzt. Notifications roll in one after the other, an endless chain of distractions to be. With TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat all fighting for attention, it can be really hard to stay focused. It is really easy to just reach for your phone, just to check - and congratulations you’ve just spent the past two hours scrolling. You’ve lost time. We need to be focused.

1 Timothy 4: 7-8, says: “Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” In context, the godless myths are lies sneaking into the church. But it could be the very lies we are letting sneak through the many messages across social media and giving them too much attention. What is the solution? How do we stand firm in the truth?

We train for godliness. Instead of weightlifting for physical training, it’s reading your Bible for spiritual training. It’s devoting time, daily, for God to refresh and restore. To be changed in prayer. But just like physical exercise, it is really hard to stay committed alone, so Student Leadership has devised a plan and would like your involvement.

Starting Monday, April 24th and lasting until Friday, May 5th is the “Going For Godliness - 5x5 Challenge”. It is an opportunity for students and staff to seek the Lord together. Each person who would like to participate gets a challenge sheet with 5 daily goals: 5 mins of reading the Word, 5 mins of prayer, 5 mins of quiet time/journaling, 5 things you’re grateful for, and 5 encouraging words. Don’t feel discouraged with such a daunting task, but instead, just try and remember that the Lord’s mercy is new every morning. Every hour if you need.

I’ll leave you with this promise and challenge from James 4:8, “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
